Step Up To Languages

Step Up To Languagesis a scheme of work that all non specialist teachers in KS2 could have access to in order to teach French effectively. New vocabulary is embedded in the slides, spoken by a native French speaker.

It covers oracy, literacy and intercultural understanding. Children are introduced to groups of words or phrases by hearing them first. They are then encouraged to practise these by repeating them and finally asked consolidate and use their knowledge by using the language which they have learned in an activity or game. This is also done through learning songs including the language which they have learnt. Topics inlude greetings, numbers, colours, days of the week, months of the year, animals, weather, clothes, family members, everyday situations, familiar stories.
Teachers are encouraged to timetable French for 30 minutes to one hour per week. Of course, using some french in everyday situations such as calling the register, talking about the date, counting school meals is good reinforcement of vocabulary learnt in lessons.
