At Preston Park Primary School, we teach a range of strategies to help children read fluently. Strategies include whole word reading and Phonics teaching. Phonics teaching starts in Nursery and continues in Reception and through to Key Stage 1 until the children are secure in applying their skills to reading. In the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children are taught phonics daily. In Key Stage 2, children are taught phonics based on the level of support required. Children are initially taught single letter sounds and progress to sounds made by groups of letters. Practise of reading words and simple texts and writing words and sentences helps to consolidate and apply knowledge.

At the end of year 1, children’s phonological ability is assessed through a statutory Phonics Screen Check. Those children who are not secure in decoding phonics at the end of year 1 are reassessed at the end of year 2.
